The JBH Story

The JBH Story

For three centuries and seven generations, JBH has been a driving force in the South Australian wine industry.

The JBH story began in 1837, when John Barton Hack (JBH)

sailed into South Australia aboard The Isabella from England in 1837, armed with a young family, huge ambition – and a handful of healthy grape vine cuttings.

Seven years later, the entrepreneurial businessman, agriculturalist and key influencer saw his vision realised when he produced South Australia’s first wine with his brother, Stephen.

John Barton Hack (or JBH) is thus widely considered the forefather of the South Australian wine industry, with many early settlers buying vine cuttings to start their own vineyards.

John Barton Hack is the great, great, great-grandfather of JBH Wines current director Chief Executive Officer, Dean Compton.

Dean is also recognised as a leading figure in South Australia’s wine export industry.

He was one of the first South Australian wine producers to export wine to China in 2004 and today, has developed an enviable network of relationships across China and beyond.

Today, Dean is the 6th generation of the John Barton Hack family dedicated to the South Australian wine industry.
